Lactation Support
Learning to breast(chest)feed can sometimes be quite challenging in the beginning. The right support can make all the difference! As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), I can support you on your feeding journey by offering accurate, evidence-based information and compassionate family-centered care, both before and after your birth.
An antenatal lactation visit is a great way to prepare for breast(chest)feeding, develop a better understanding of how breastfeeding works and what to expect in the first few weeks, and help determine what your personal breastfeeding goals and priorities might be. An antenatal consultation will last 1-1.5 hours and can cover the following topics:
The benefits of breastfeeding for you and your baby;
How to get breastfeeding off to the best start possible;
The mechanics of breastfeeding;
The benefits of skin-to-skin contact, The Golden Hour (and The Golden First Six Weeks)
Latch and positioning basics, and what positions might work best in different settings;
How to initiate and maintain a great milk supply;
Antenatal colostrum harvesting;
What to expect from your baby during the first few days and weeks;
What to expect from your body during the first few days and weeks;
Strategies for coping with the unexpected, such as a baby born early or needing special care;
Common breastfeeding pitfalls and how to avoid them;
How to troubleshoot early breastfeeding problems.

What People Are Saying
“Ali was amazing from beginning to end! She arrived one morning when I was pretty desperate and could almost have given up breastfeeding and Ali was immediately both supportive and encouraging and deeply resourceful and expert in all things breastfeeding. Ali assessed the situation, supported us with a feeding plan, and importantly—when emotions are high—was not dogmatic about any one approach but really what would work for me and to have a content baby at that moment in time. Ali was very invested in our success and her regular check ins and calls as the days and weeks progressed were invaluable. With her practical ideas and advice and with lots of practice with my baby, 3 weeks after meeting Ali I am able to breastfeed pain free, with a growing baby. Ali is brilliant and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her!” — Hanna
“Ali provided me with invaluable advice and support when Felix was just 5 days old. Felix was very slow to latch on, he didn't feed for two days, and then feeding was very painful and Felix was struggling to feed for longer than 30 seconds at a time. Ali was great at listening to our story and quickly diagnosed Felix with a tongue tie. With Ali's support we worked out some comfortable and sustainable feeding positions that worked for both Felix and I. Ali also took time to send me loads of great information on MS (which I suffer from) and breastfeeding which was great as I was struggling with my neurologist who was encouraging me to stop breastfeeding in order to re-start medication. This gave me the confidence I needed to challenge what he was saying and to happily continue feeding Felix. Felix is now a strapping 6 month old and we love the bond that breastfeeding has given us and although now he's not the worlds most enthusiastic eater (he usually has way too many other projects on the go now to fully relax!!) he is so healthy and happy thanks to the great start I was able to give him with Ali's support.” — Polly
“My experience with Ali was amazing.
We saw her when my baby, Leon, was 8 days old. I had seen a couple of breastfeeding consultants before Ali, but I didn't feel their approach suited us. They were quite forceful with our little boy which wasn’t pleasant for him or us.
Ali was incredibly gentle and explained everything in a calm, patient and sensitive manner. She spent a lot of time sitting with us to get a good understanding of the difficulties we were having with Leon. She also included my husband in everything, which was great for him and a lovely bonding experience for us.
Breastfeeding can be very challenging at times, both mentally and physically, and it's easy to give up. Ali’s compassionate and caring approach helped build my confidence and after just a couple of weeks my baby was breastfeeding perfectly. I also found the detailed notes she sent after each consultation really helpful. None of this would have been possible without her and for that, both my husband and I are eternally grateful.” — Jo
“Ali was recommended to me by a friend and she came to visit us when my daughter Aliyah was just over a week old. I had been given little support, help or information regarding Aliyah's inability to latch. I had been pressured into giving formula milk rather than try to deal with the latching issues. Ali was absolutely wonderful and gave me more support, help and information than I had received from all the nurses and specialists at the hospital combined. She was warm, open and caring, and asked questions about my wellbeing as well as my daughter's - any new mother understands how important it is to feel cared for as a woman by someone when we're busy giving our all to our babies. Ali diagnosed a tongue tie and gave us heaps of information to deal with it: the name and contact details of specialists who could snip it, a plan of action with regards to breast feeding after that, options to try when things didn't work. She was very professional and I didn't hesitate to recommend her to other friends who had babies after me. Although the breast feeding didn't work out for me long-term due to the hormonal impact of a fibroid making it too difficult to sustain an adequate milk supply, I do believe that without Ali's help I wouldn't have been able to give my daughter breast milk for the 3-4 months she did get it. And for that I'm truly thankful.” — Amber
“I just wanted to drop you a line to say a huge thank you for all the help you gave me when I was struggling to breastfeed my daughter.
You set us exercises to work on, managed to work out how much breastmilk J had taken from weighing her before and after a feed (which calmed my mind and motivated me no end) and, generally, you were endlessly positive at the same time as being realistic and backing up all your suggestions with reassuring evidence. When I said I was reconciled to combination feeding, you told me I was in a good enough place not to give up on exclusive breastfeeding whilst, at the same time, not making me feel in any way bad about turning to formula if necessary. In fact, you were so completely nonjudgemental about that, that it actually gave me the space to breathe and dare to continue to try with the boob.
Well, J is 11 months old and I am still breastfeeding her. Who knows when we'll stop - she's taking less each time so I'll be guided by her. But I cannot believe that I am even typing this. The idea that this could ever be the case when I first emailed you asking for help, is almost too hard to believe.
I can't express to you how grateful I am for your help which went above and beyond the fee you charged. You even reviewed videos of me attempting to feed J and got back to me with comforting feedback (which, as the last thing I read before bed, allowed me to have a go at a nights' sleep). Really, I think you should have billed for that, but although I suggested it, you simply focussed on helping us.
Even my lovely mum, who came up to visit and support me, was putting gentle pressure on me to turn to formula as she had had no support breastfeeding and so had ended up bottle feeding me and both my brothers. Well, Mum's attitude completely switched after meeting you. As soon as you left, she was right on board with it all and, instead of saying "just give her a bottle!" she set up and held the feeding tube so I could do that exercise to encourage J to be more active at the breast.
In short - you have changed our lives and I will never forget you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.” —Sarah
